HISTORY OF THESSALONIKI

Ancient times

Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, with population 1.000.000 residents, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was founded in 316 e.g. on the site of a prehistoric settlement of its time 2300 e.g., by Cassandros, king of Macedonia, and was named after his wife and sister of Alexander the Great. Since then, Thessaloniki became the capital of Macedonia. In Roman times it could boast of having the largest port in the region, while it stood at the point where the high road from the north met the main east- western artery. In Byzantium

The Turkish rule

Thessaloniki was conquered by the Ottomans in 1430. It remained under the Turkish yoke, that is, about five centuries (1430- 1912). Thessaloniki continued to maintain its important role in the Greek state, with important policies, economic and cultural activities.
